Despite various flaws in the actions of Marcus Garvey, he cannot be dismissed as a charlatan. Garvey’s Black Star Line was a failure and he was charged with fraud before being deported from the US. His claim to have been the provisional president of Africa is also quite questionable. However he did have some influence as a civil rights leader. Garvey was the first major candidate for the Black-nationalist movement in the US. This movement later gave rise to the influential Nation of Islam and Malcolm X.
